About The Adrien and Martin Joly Blog

Brothers Adrien and Martin follow in the footsteps of many travelers who crossed the Balkans from antiquity to modern times. But they do it by bicycle! Starting on October 6, they have given themselves one month to cycle the nearly 2,100-kilometre distance between Venice and Istanbul. In their blog, they reflect on and document their journey as they travel through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Their blog in French is at http://balkansavelo.unblog.fr/

From Portogruaro to Trieste

October 14, 2008 • Comments Bulgaria

We leave the lovely Italian Family, wishing the best to Elisa who is about to get married to Stefano.

We have to be in Triest for the night, so we cycle all day long, part of it is along the coast. It is very sunny but we are still on the SS14 and have to deal with the heavy lorries.

We can already see the Balkans as we arrive in Trieste. Impressive mountains which seem to be falling into the water. We are a bit scared to think that we will have to cycle across them.

At 6 Pm, we arrive in Trieste from the North as we choose another road, beautiful but very hilly. The good things about arriving in trieste is that we go downhill and Martin proudly has achieved his speed records 60km/hrs, Adrien 55km/hrs.

Trieste is extremely busy,  the city is built between the mountain and the sea.  We are looking for a youth hostels and we find one where we can stay. We meet Louise, an Irish girl who decided to go to New Zealand on her bike.

The youth hostel of Trieste is facing the sea and offers an amazing view.  We talks to two Croatians who helps us planning the next part of our trip.

Adrien and Martin Joly

Adrien and Martin Joly

French brothers Adrien and Martin – both passionate travellers, embark on their first journey together as they cycle across the Balkans. When not travelling, Adrien works as at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton as an interpreter, while Martin works for an NGO in Paris. Adrien considers his first important journey to have been when he travelled along the Amazon River and relied on the local people’s hospitality 10 years ago. Martin, who also practices photography as an amateur, spent a year in Central America and walked across Iceland, the Pyrenees and Peru.
