About The Adrien and Martin Joly Blog

Brothers Adrien and Martin follow in the footsteps of many travelers who crossed the Balkans from antiquity to modern times. But they do it by bicycle! Starting on October 6, they have given themselves one month to cycle the nearly 2,100-kilometre distance between Venice and Istanbul. In their blog, they reflect on and document their journey as they travel through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Their blog in French is at http://balkansavelo.unblog.fr/

From San Antonio to Cres (Croatia)

October 14, 2008 • Comments Croatia

We try to motivate ourselves this morning.. Our target is Cres!

It should be possible, we only have to cross the mountains of Slovenia and Croatia.. It is only 90km, but very hilly… it goes up and down… We really hope that our bikes and ourselves will be able to do it.

The road is very beautiful, mountains, forest with the colours of Autumn, it is a bit hot but very nice.

Cross the border of Croatia, stop at Buzet for lunch.. A medieval city on the top of a hill. Bikes need a bit of fixing, but we are able to cross the mountains, and reach the Croatian Coast, the end of the journey is a bit exhausting…

We cycle on the E 751 from Vozlici to Brestova to catch the Ferry, just on time and we can be on Cres at 8,30Pm but it is all night.

We split up on the Island and look for somewhere to camp, we find a beach… We have to carry our bikes.. After cooking one of our ready to eat meal, we fall asleep in our sleeping bag on the beach.

We can see the star, the sea and in front of the light of Rijeka.

Adrien and Martin Joly

Adrien and Martin Joly

French brothers Adrien and Martin – both passionate travellers, embark on their first journey together as they cycle across the Balkans. When not travelling, Adrien works as at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton as an interpreter, while Martin works for an NGO in Paris. Adrien considers his first important journey to have been when he travelled along the Amazon River and relied on the local people’s hospitality 10 years ago. Martin, who also practices photography as an amateur, spent a year in Central America and walked across Iceland, the Pyrenees and Peru.
