About The Adrien and Martin Joly Blog

Brothers Adrien and Martin follow in the footsteps of many travelers who crossed the Balkans from antiquity to modern times. But they do it by bicycle! Starting on October 6, they have given themselves one month to cycle the nearly 2,100-kilometre distance between Venice and Istanbul. In their blog, they reflect on and document their journey as they travel through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Their blog in French is at http://balkansavelo.unblog.fr/

From Cres to Rab

October 14, 2008 • Comments Croatia

How nice to wake up on a beach and to discover the most amazing landscape.

Shame we have nothing to eat, and 25 kms of mountains to cycle through to be in the next town, Cres…

Our flasks are almost empties… But we have no choice. The steep hill of the beginning is scary, maximum speed 8km/h. We decide to eat what a Fruit Bar, present given by my manager before the departure in case of emergency…

3 hours later, hungry, we arrive in Cres, a beautiful Town by the sea. We rush to the first restaurant and order two pints, and big meal…

Not such a wise decision… The day is so hot..

After lunch, just like two tramps, we fall on the pavement of one street and sleep between our bikes and a group of French tourist in the middle of their guided tour.

We now have to the Port, naively we think it is going to be flat…. And we are near the nervous breakdown, it goes up and down all the way long… The landscape is just amazing fortunately, and makes forget the hardship of cycling under the strong sun.

We reach the ferry and go straight to Rab… After a bit of cycling, we decide to rest.. There is nowhere to stay as it is off season. We find a sandy beach completely deserted, the problem is humidity, it is very wet.

A group of young German are having their little walk night. They offer us to join their party “Octobeer” as it is called…

We pack up quickly and follow them.. We find a party of happy Germans, very drunk, and very nice. We can even stay in a caravan after 5 beers each and many Shot of a very strong alchool…

But at least we sleep well.

French brothers Adrien and Martin – both passionate travellers, embark on their first journey together as they cycle across the Balkans. When not travelling, Adrien works as at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton as an interpreter, while Martin works for an NGO in Paris. Adrien considers his first important journey to have been when he travelled along the Amazon River and relied on the local people’s hospitality 10 years ago.
