About The Adrien and Martin Joly Blog

Brothers Adrien and Martin follow in the footsteps of many travelers who crossed the Balkans from antiquity to modern times. But they do it by bicycle! Starting on October 6, they have given themselves one month to cycle the nearly 2,100-kilometre distance between Venice and Istanbul. In their blog, they reflect on and document their journey as they travel through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Their blog in French is at http://balkansavelo.unblog.fr/

Hvar Island to Dubrovnik

October 22, 2008 • Comments Croatia

We wake early as always to catch the morning ferry. Martin takes some artistic pictures to make the ferry's journey go faster.

Arriving in Dubrovnik, we are assaulted by an army of Croatians offering a bedroom in their house for 15 euros per person… As we cycle accross the city at every stop, a Croatian asks us if we need a room. Martin decides to put a sign on our bikes ” WE DO NOT NEED A ROOM”.

We go to the only open camping of Dubrovnik which seems something luxurious for us.

We meet this Australian lovely couple, Alison and Karl who are travelling accross Europe with their camper van. Karl spend a few hours trying to sort out “connor”'s wheel mysterious problem.. After its puncture, the Connor's tyre has a funny shape.  No one can understand why.

We take our bikes to visit Dubrovnik which is the jewel of the Adriatic's sea… A fortress trapped between the mountain and the sea. As we walk some narrow street, one can easily imagine being  a traveller in the 16th century.

At night, we are disturbed by a little cat, who insists it should sleep in the tent.. We try to get rid of him but it is impossible… So we adopt it.. And it spends the night purring on our sleeping bag.

Adrien and Martin Joly

Adrien and Martin Joly

French brothers Adrien and Martin – both passionate travellers, embark on their first journey together as they cycle across the Balkans. When not travelling, Adrien works as at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton as an interpreter, while Martin works for an NGO in Paris. Adrien considers his first important journey to have been when he travelled along the Amazon River and relied on the local people’s hospitality 10 years ago. Martin, who also practices photography as an amateur, spent a year in Central America and walked across Iceland, the Pyrenees and Peru.
