About The Adrien and Martin Joly Blog
Brothers Adrien and Martin follow in the footsteps of many travelers who crossed the Balkans from antiquity to modern times. But they do it by bicycle! Starting on October 6, they have given themselves one month to cycle the nearly 2,100-kilometre distance between Venice and Istanbul. In their blog, they reflect on and document their journey as they travel through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Their blog in French is at http://balkansavelo.unblog.fr/
Budva, three idle days waiting for an ID.
October 23, 2008 • Comments Montenegro
The next day, we wake up in the room our friend Rovshan managed to find us…
We go to his office, where his colleague knows a French Man working in the French Ambassy… After a few chat, we realise that what the only thing they could do is sending us back to France.. We need another solution.. Martin remembers that he has an Id card somewhere in our family house in France… We phone our mother who very happily between six important meetings will send the ID card with DHL to the Russian company… It shoult takes two days..
With this ID, we cant' go to Kosovo (even with a Passport it is difficult), we can go to Turkey but not to Serbia and Albania… And we are too short of time, unless we cycle days and nights which has a limited interest… We decide to bury Venice Istambul, we will go to Napoli. There is a ferry crossing from Bar to Bari. Then, we will only have to cycle 300km to reach Napoli.. We will have time to stop at Pompei and Herculanum, so it will be a proper Grand tour..
We are so lucky to have met Rovshan who is a fantastic help, everything is sorted out for us in Budva..
And we decide to enjoy life as much as one can do…
We quickly start to know a few people and it is a nice experience to stop in a town and learn more about how people live… So maybe, it was not so bad to loose the Passport…
We visit the old town of Budva, and San Stefan..
Bikes are so light without our bags… We could maybe restore a house and finish our days in Budva working for a Russian tycoon.

Adrien and Martin Joly
French brothers Adrien and Martin – both passionate travellers, embark on their first journey together as they cycle across the Balkans. When not travelling, Adrien works as at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton as an interpreter, while Martin works for an NGO in Paris. Adrien considers his first important journey to have been when he travelled along the Amazon River and relied on the local people’s hospitality 10 years ago. Martin, who also practices photography as an amateur, spent a year in Central America and walked across Iceland, the Pyrenees and Peru.
