BalkanTravellers.com

18 September 2009 | Bronze fibulae - Roman brooches used to fasten clothes, a marble pair of scales and bronze coins from the third and fourth centuries were discovered during archaeological excavations of the ancient fortress Dimum near the town of Belene in northern Bulgaria.

During the 2009 archaeological season, excavations were carried out in the ancient citadel’s central part. Future research will aim to determine the fortress’s size and internal set-up and outline its borders, Darik Radio reported today.

The town of Belene inherited the Roman settlement of Dimum, which was founded on the banks of the Danube River in the third century and existed until the seventh century.
