The actor came as a guest of honour of prominent film director Emir Kosturica, who is the festival’s organiser.
The two met with Serbian president Boris Tadic and then continued on to Drvengrad – an artificial Serbian village built by Kosturica for the filming of “Life is a Miracle,” which now serves as an uninhabited tourist attraction.
A life-size statue of Depp, created by sculptor Dragan Nikolic Baja, will be unveiled at the opening ceremony of the Kustendorf Festival today.
The festival will screen 28 films from 18 countries.
Depp “will be my guest for three days in Mecavnik (Drvengrad), he will lead several workshops for participants of the festival, drink wine, watch films and visit some locations where he will shoot a film about Pancho Villa,” Kusturica told the daily publication Blic.
According to national media, Kusturica is now working on a new film, “Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers,” with production set to begin at the end of next year. In addition to Depp, Hollywood star Salma Hayek and Serbian actor Miki Manojlovic will play the main parts in the film.
