Music Fusion Takes Centre Stage in Bulgaria’s Capital
BalkanTravellers.com
Organised by the Fusion Embassy – an enthusiastic multinational collective whose aim is to use the power of music as an answer to globalisation issues, the events in the next several days will surely bring a much-welcome diversity to Sofia’s ever more exciting music scene.
Starting tonight as the city’s first fusion music competition, the Sofia Music Rally will bring together five bands that will compete on the stage of the Sofia Live Club. The five pre-selected bands, including Oratnitza, Merudia, Flambura, Silver Beat Collective and Kargona, will interpret the Bulgarian folk song “Lele Svashke” by mixing it with beats ranging from funk and jazz to reggae, dub and tango. The competition winner will be selected by a jury and an audience vote.
The Sofia Music Rally takes place on February 9, starting at 9pm at the Sofia Live Club. Entrance is free.
The second event planned as part of the project is the Fusion Orchestra concert at the Bulgarian National Radio. The orchestra, which now consists of a Belgian music composer and over 10 young Bulgarian musicians, started to come together last summer, when they got together for a week-long jam session in the village of Dolen in the Rhodopi Mountains.
The Fusion Orchestra will perform on February 11 at 9:30pm in Studio 1 of the Bulgarian National Radio. Entrance is free.
The final, and grandest, event of the series will be the Electrofusion=MusiC² Festival on Saturday, which will bring together the Fusion Orchestra, the winning band of the Sofia Music Rally and several Bulgarian and European DJs who will be mixing old Bulgarian Balkanton records with disco, funk, electrofunk, folklore beatbox and worldbeats.
The Electrofusion=MusiC² Festival will take place on February 13, starting at 9:30pm in the Gallery Industrialna 11, located on the street of the same name. Entrance is 10 Bulgarian leva (around 5 euro), but organisers promise good drinks at democratic prices.

A Brief History of the Late Ottoman Empire (2008) | By M. Şűkrű Hanioğlu
Far too often, the narrative of the collapse of an empire becomes a moral drama. Wealth is drained away by decadence, and power undercut by corruption. There are attempts at recovery, reform, re-consolidation; perhaps a war, or a grand alliance, or another gamble which seems mad in hindsight. Private fiefdoms emerge, tribes break away, and hostile external powers chip away at the borders.
