Lake Ohrid’s High Water Lever Threaten International Road between Macedonia and Albania

BalkanTravellers.com

24 February 2010 | The international road from Macedonia to Albania, which passes by the Saint Naum Monastery, is threatened by destruction from the high level of the Ohrid Lake and subterranean waters, Ohrid’s mayor Aleksandar Petreski, told media today.

The water, which has been rising and even flooding parts of Ohrid, has already destroyed part of the road to the church of Saint John at Kaneo that overlooks the lake. A bridge on the road has collapsed.

“When the water pulls away, we will reconstruct it, the mayor said, cited by the Focus Information Agency.

In his words, water from the lake should have been let out as early as September, in order to make room for the water that now fills it from rain and the melting snow. Even if the maximum amounts of water are let out now, there is more water coming in and the situation is critical, Petreski added.

The Monastery Saint Naum, by which the now threatened road to Albania passes, is situated 29 kilometres south of the city of Ohrid. The monastery was established in 905 by St Naum of Ohrid himself.

Although released just in 2007, Realm of the Black Mountain: A History of Montenegro comes from a much older school of scholarship. With this much needed work, former diplomat Elizabeth Roberts has produced the newest and best introduction to the full history of a storied and sometimes inscrutable land the identity of which was formed equally by its forbidding mountains and balmy Adriatic coast- still the features most representative of Montenegro today and most enticing to its increasing number of foreign visitors.
