Croatia Launches Cruise Season

Text by Balkan Insight

16 March 2010 | Spanish cruise ship Gimini arrived on Saturday in Dubrovnik and marked the official start to the cruise ship season.

The ship, carrying around 940 passengers, arrived at Dubrovnik's new docking area at Gruz port.

The city port expects new ship MSC Magnifica, with 3,113 passengers onboard, to dock on March 19. The ship was launched in Hamburg on March 6 and will arrive for the first time in Dubrovnik, the Croatian Times reports.

MSC Magnifica will dock every Saturday at Dubrovnik and is expected to bring many tourists to the city before the season ends.

A Dubrovnik port official told Hina news agency that this year there would be at least 30,000 cruise ships and more tourists than in 2009, when 846,000 came ashore in Dubrovnik.
