Greece: Tax Authorities Investigate Luxurious Living from Helicopters

BalkanTravellers.com

4 August 2010 | In efforts to reduce Greek debt and increase revenue to the state budget, Greece has created a special team of tax experts who will use satellite images and investigate the owners of luxurious cars in order to catch tax evaders.

The measure of creating the special unit is accompanied by more traditional measures, such an increase in luxury property taxes and a cut in budget spending, the Czech newspaper Hospodářské noviny reported today.

The careful investigation of luxurious living by the special tax experts’ team has increased the incoming taxes as well as the revenue from additional fines.

As BalkanTravellers.com reported earlier this year, Greek tax authorities investigated owners of undeclared swimming pools.

This week, Greece expects to receive its first evaluation from Brussels on whether it is fulfilling the conditions for the financial help it is receiving.
