Bulgaria fears “tumultuous” snow melting
BalkanTravellers.com
11 February 2012 | After spending the last weeks in deadly cold, now Bulgaria fears that the expected sudden raise in temperatures may turn into another disaster. Meteorologists expressed worries that the situation may go out of control in case all the fallen snow started melting at once.
The weather forecasts are uncertain, but statistics show that in the last years the warming up tends to occur abruptly, commented Dobri Dimitrov of the Bulgarian National meteorology institute. According to him under similar developments this year there is a good chance that the two of the biggest Bulgarian rivers, Arda and Maritsa, will overflow. He said the dams also need to be watched carefully.
Even more, because the spring warming usually brings rains, which will further aggravate the situation, said Dimitrov.
One dam in South Bulgaria already failed in the cold last week, causing the flooding of a small village and claiming the lives of 8 people.

Practically a country of its own, this vast island looms over all others in Greece. Nevertheless, as In Sfakia author Peter Trudgill aptly notes in his preface, “some parts of Crete are more special than others, and Sfakia, on the remote south coast, is certainly one of those.” Full Story
