Thessaloniki’s Coast in Greece Could be an Immediate Global Warming Victim

Balkan Travellers

26 February 2008 | Between 22 and 98 square kilometres of Thessaloniki’s bay in Greece are expected to sink in the coming decades, scientists announced.

The area will be one of the first to suffer from the expected raise of Aegean Sea level, resulting from global warming processes.

This conclusion of academic researchers was announced yesterday in publications of the Greek press, which also warned that that the famous bay of Thessloniki is one of the three national zones facing the highest risk of submergence.

Local media also published scientific findings, which forecast a decrease by 33 per cent in the rainfall over Greece in the coming decades.
