How to pick the right time to go? Winter is beautiful in the high mountains, the problem is, it can be so cold! Then again, who cares how cold it is - the locals have a cheap cure: heavy red wine. Sometimes warmed up.

I went a couple of winters ago to Bansko, the skiing resort in Bulgaria, and it WAS quite cold, or at least the termometers showed at some point -8C. But I have to admit i hardly felt this. First, because it seems the humidity is low, and also, because, true, all the time we were not busy with skying, we had those delicious wines all around the mechanas in the town. It was nice, i will certainly go again...
