Second Phase of Rail Infrastructure Repair Begins in Republika Srpska

Balkan Travellers

25 April 2008 | The second phase of the rail line infrastructure repair in Republika Srpska began, the entity’s Transport and Communications officials recently told media.

The cost of the repair works is around 70 million euro, the Bosnian on-line media Nezavisne novine reported. The total value of the credit for Bosnia and Herzegovina for the growth and development of the main rail network in the region is 173 million euro, Nedeljko Cubrilovic, Transport and Communications Minister said, adding that a yearly development of five per cent is envisioned.

The first phase, worth 25 million euro, was completed at the beginning of the year. It was financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The most important project of that phase was the repair of the 22-kilometre rail line between the entity’s capital, Banja Luka, and the village of Josavka.

The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska are the two lower-level-governance political entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Republika Srpska is populated by a large majority of Serbs and lies in the northern and eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
