Open-Air Photographic Exhibition of Bulgaria from Above Displayed in Sofia
Balkan Travellers
The 120 photographs capture different landscapes from around Bulgaria, raging from fields and water bodies to human activity and pollution. What makes the images striking is not only their large scale, but also their perpective: Ivanov captured the images while paragliding at a height between 40 and 4,000 metres.
Although the exhibition, which is free to the public, officially opens in Sofia on Tuesday, BalkanTravellers.com found that the Lovers’ Bridge near the National Palace of Culture, whose two sides were already lined with the images was crowded with visitors on Sunday evening.
The collection of photographs will be on display in Sofia until June 18. From June 26 until July 23, they will be exhibited on Troykata Square in Burgas, then at the entrance of the Sea Garden in Varna between July 31 and August 28. Finally, they will be shown in Plovdiv’s central square between September 5 and October 3.
Ivanov’s work immediately brings to mind the Earth From Above images of Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Judging from the fact that an exhibition of 120 of Arthus-Bertrand's photographs was shown at the same location in Sofia last year, it seems that Magazine 1, which organised both of the events, is not shying away from the parallels.
And while Arthus-Bertrand offers a bird’s eye view of locations around the globe, Ivanov’s images are of places located within no more than six or seven hours by car from Sofia, which inspires a strange kind of wanderlust. But even if one never visits the captured locations in person, he is left with a pleasant surprise at the diversity of landscapes in the country. “This is one of the best advertisement campaigns of Bulgaria until now,” the exhibitions organizers from the told media.
