Lakes' Beaches in Macedonia Get Filled, but Lack Lifeguards

BalkanTravellers.com

1 July 2008 | As the shores of Macedonia’s major lakes are getting crowded with holidaymakers, the lack of professionally trained lifeguards comes into attention, national media reported recently.

In the past years, around 100 lifeguards were trained only in Ohrid, in the south-western part of the country, the Macedonian newspaper Vreme reported, but only two of the lake’s beaches have lifeguards. Ohrid is the largest lake in Macedonia.

The situation is worse at the country’s other two major lakes – Prespa and Dojran, located in the south-western and south-eastern part of the country respectively. The number of tourists there grows every year, Vreme noted, but there isn’t a single professional lifeguard. This may explain the series of victims of drowning in the two lakes in recent years.
