BalkanTravellers.com

13 August 2008 | Traffic across the border between Greece and Albania has increased because of many Albanian citizens’ returning home for a religious holiday, Greek media reported today.

Albanians, which – according to the Greek Ethnos newspaper, make up the largest group of economic immigrants in Greece, are returning to their home country en masse[ital] for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which is marked on August 15.

Over the weekend, the line at the Kakavie border crossing point reached several kilometres and caused a delay of about 4 hours, the publication noted. Between July 15 and August 11, 140,000 people crossed the border into Albania, while 90,000 went from Albania into Greece.

The peak of returning Albanian citizens, Ethnos wrote, is expected to begin after August 20.
