Archeologists Begin Excavations of Medieval Fortress in Štip, Macedonia

BalkanTravellers.com

22 August 2008 | A team of archaeologists started excavations of the early medieval fortress of Isar in the town of Štip in central Macedonia, national media reported recently.

The exploration stage of the project, according to the Dnevnik newspaper, will continue until the end of the year. “Then, we will examine the walls. Conservation and partial reconstruction of the mediaeval town is planned,” Zvonko Beldedovski, archaeologist at the Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture and Museum in Štip, told media.

The excavations and reconstruction of the fortress, financed by the Macedonian Ministry of Culture, will be carried out over the next four years.

Archaeologists plan to determine how many towers the tenth-century medieval fortress had, as well as to examine an old settlement, Astibo, assumed to lie under the fortress.

The hill of Isar, topped by the fortress, dominates Štip and serves as the reason why the town is referred to as “The city under the Isar.”
