6 Million Trees to be Planted in Macedonia as Part of Day of the Tree Campaign

16 October 2008 | The Macedonian civil organization Den na Drvoto (Day of the Tree) has planned another massive forestation activity, through which 6 million trees will be planted throughout the country on October 26.

The six million trees will be planted in 100 places in Macedonia, Minister of Agriculture, Atso Spasenoski, told media at a press conference, according to the Bulgarian news agency Focus. Spasenovski added that a similar campaign is planned for March 12 of next year in all the Balkan countries.

If it goes through, this massive tree-planting will take place exactly a year after the first such initiative took place in Macedonia. On March 12 of this year, between 150,000 and 200,000 Macedonians planted 2 million trees – symbolising one for each citizen in the nation.

In addition to the ecological benefits, which addressed the forests that were damaged by the hundreds of fires that raged in the country in 2007, the project also affected Macedonia’s society in a positive way. According to Balkanalysis.com, one of the leading independent news and analysis groups on the Balkans, the common tree-planting activities managed to bring together different fractions of Macedonian society, such as Macedonians, members of the Albanian majority and the Jewish community.
