Western Macedonia region in Northern Greece to Get Fourth Winter Resort

BalkanTravellers.com

31 October 2008 | A fourth mountain resort is to be built in the Western Macedonia region in the northern part of Greece, following the public-private partnership model, Greek media reported today.

Investment in the project will amount to 100 million euro instead of 30 million as was planned initially, the Naftemporiki newspaper wrote. The funds will be invested in the construction of a ski resort and tourism infrastructure, including projects around the Polyfytos Lake.

It is expected that West Macedonia will receive a total of 51 million euro for the development of tourism and culture in the region as part of the common strategic reference framework for 2007 to 2013. The region received 23.4 million euro for 47 cultural projects and another 4 million euro for projects connected to tourism from the previous regional operational programme.

West Macedonia is one of Greece’s thirteenth peripheries, or official regional administrative divisions. It is the only Greek periphery without access to a sea coast, but it boasts mountains and lakes. The three ski centres already in place in the region are Vigla near the town of Florina, Vasilitsa near Grevena and Velvento near Kozani.

2008 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the original publication of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s Mani: Travels in the Southern Peloponnese, considered one of the most important travelogues of the twentieth century by many critics. Although the book is now often described as a ‘companion text’ to the author’s later account of travels in Northern Greece, Roumeli (1966), the author reveals that he originally meant it to be ‘a single chapter among many’ that would cumulatively encompass his long travels and experience throughout Greek lands.
