BalkanTravellers.com

13 November 2008 | Macedonia’s capital celebrates today the anniversary of its liberation with a series of events, one of which is an art exhibition dedicated to the city.

The show, titled “Memories of Tradition / Painting of the Skopje Old Bazaar” includes more than 130 paintings, dedicated to Skopje and the city’s Old Bazaar, on display at the Museum of the City of Skopje.

Skopje’s Old Bazaar, pictured above, is one of the city’s symbols and a major tourist attraction. A place which historically brought together the Christian and Muslim inhabitants of Skopje, the bazaar spreads over several streets lined with small shops, and it is one of the few places in the capital where traditional crafts can still be seen.

Some of the most established figures in Macedonian modern art, including Nikola Martinovski, Lazar Lichenoski, Dimitar Pandilov, Lyubomir Belogaski, Tomo Vladimirski and Rodolyub Anastasov, authored the work that make up the exhibition.

Today’s date marks 64 years since Skopje was liberated from Nazi occupation during the Second World War. The anniversary is being commemorated throughout the city with various events and celebrations, such as other exhibitions, a meeting of the Mayor with Sorld War II veterans, giving out of “13 November” prizes to distinguished citizens and electing the best Skopje athletes.
