Greece’s Rail Routes Decrease, as Train Ticket Prices Increase

BalkanTravellers.com

24 November 2008 | Rail ticket prices in Greece will increase, while the routes and frequency of trains in the country are to be reduced by the end of the year.
The plan is to raise ticket prices in accordance to the passengers’ flow, according to the Ta Nea newspaper. A serious cut of the serviced routes and the frequency of the trains in the peripheral network of the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE) is also being considered. Northern Greece and the Peloponnese Peninsula are the two main areas where services are to be cut, according to the plan.

It is expected that the adjustment in the OSE’s routes and ticket prices will be announced next month by Greece’s transport ministry, the publication noted. According to it, the entire organisation is on standby, because of the planned changes. The fact that tickets for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays can not be reserved yet testifies for the fact.

Although the book is now often described as a ‘companion text’ to the author’s later account of travels in Northern Greece, Roumeli (1966), the author reveals that he originally meant it to be ‘a single chapter among many’ that would cumulatively encompass his long travels and experience throughout Greek lands.
