According to the new conditions, agreed upon with the EU, foreign citizens will be able to buy real estate in Croatia under the same circumstances as the country’s citizens, the DPA news agency reported. Agricultural land and forests will not be sold freely.
At the same time, many Croats are concerned that the best spots along their country’s coast will soon be owned by foreigners, the publication noted.
From July of 2006 until now, Croatian authorities received 8,122 requests by foreign citizens, asking for a permission to purchase real estate. In the last nine years, only 3,553 such requests have been granted.
Germans and Austrians are the two nationalities that have shown the highest interest in buying property in Croatia.
