Well-preserved, Pre-Historic Boat Found in the Black Sea near Bulgaria’s Sozopol

BalkanTravellers.com

1 December 2008 | A very well-preserved, wooden, dugout boat, most likely dating to the Pre-Historic era, was discovered near the town of Sozopol, in the waters of Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast.

The boat was found by fishermen 15 miles into the sea, to the east of the Maslen Nos Cape between the coastal towns of Sozopol and Primorsko, national and regional media reported today.

The boat is 2.60 metres long and 0.70 metres wide.

Such boats and other sailing vessels that are older than 300 years are found hardly anywhere in the world because the wood rots, according to Dimitar Nedkov, director of Sozopol’s Archaeology Museum.

However, according to Nedkov, the Black Sea contains, under a certain depth, a layer of dissolved hydrogen sulphide which preserves organic materials, such as wood, which allowed for the boat to be preserved for such a long period.

The rare find has been transported to Sozopol’s Archaeology Museum.
