BBC Makes Film Report on Macedonia’s Ethno-Town of Krushevo

21 July 2009 | The British Broadcasting Corporation has arrived in Macedonia to make a reportage about the country and the ongoing “Krushevo – Ethno Town” project.

The crew will visit the central Macedonian town of Krushevo, where an event is currently underway, before of the annual observances of the Ilinden Uprising and Macedonia’s national holiday on August 2.

Funded by the Ministry of Culture and organized by the Krusevo Historic Museum and Ilinden Days, it will last until the end of August.

The event began last Sunday, when 800 participants, dressed in traditional costumes as insurgents and Turks paraded through the town in commemoration of the 106th anniversary of the Ilinden uprising against Ottoman rule which took place in the town in August of 1903.

Although the uprising was eventually crushed, with thousands of people killed, executed or made homeless during the actual campaign and its aftermath, most historians agree that it managed to nevertheless attract Western Europe’s attention. Historical interpretations of the event often reflect Bulgaria’s and Macedonia’s on-going national aspirations, but the uprising is nevertheless considered as a key event in the history of both countries and it’s leaders are celebrated as heroes.

BBC’s reportage on Macedonia and Krushevo will be aired on BBC World in mid-August, according to the Macedonian Information Agency, MIA.

Jointly prepared by the BBC and the London-based International Office for Economic Promotion of Macedonia in Great Britain, Ireland and Iceland, the project is an outstanding opportunity for a new global promotion of Macedonia due to the fact that BBC World is watched by over 75 million viewers worldwide, Kosta Koteski, the organisation’s manager told MIA.

In Sfakia: Passing Time in the Wilds of Crete (2008) | By Peter Trudgill

Crete has long been acknowledged as one of the most singular and unique parts of Greece. Its people keep a fierce hold on their traditions, customs and history. Practically a country of its own, this vast island looms over all others in Greece. Nevertheless, as In Sfakia author Peter Trudgill aptly notes in his preface, “some parts of Crete are more special than others, and Sfakia, on the remote south coast, is certainly one of those.” Full Story
