Dome of 14-Century Church in Romania Collapsed

BalkanTravellers.com

13 June 2008 | A fire caused the collapse of the dome of the fourtheenth-century Evangelical church, a historical landmark, in the Bistriţa-Năsăud county in northern Romania, national media reported today.

The church, according to the newspaper Ziua, was being renovated, with scaffolding raised around its dome.

There was no damage to the church’s interior, but the dome’s collapse and the destruction if the two bells have caused a loss, estimated at over one million euro.

It is supposed that the fire, which started on Thursday evening, was caused by two children who were seen climbing around on the scaffolding.

The Evangelical church had the highest dome, around 75 metres, in the Transylvania region. Initially built in the Gothic style in the fourteenth century, it was completed in the subsequent century and later transformed in the Renaissance style.
