The Taiko Drumming Legends Za Ondekoza Play in Belgrade

Balkan Travellers

January 21 2008 | One of the best known Japanese drum groups, Za Ondekoza, will perform in Belgrade’s Sava Centre on February 12.

The musicians already played to fully packed concert halls in Ljubljana and Zagreb. The show in the Serbian capital is the latest stop on their Balkans tour.

Za Ondekoza, which literally means ‘demon drum group’, was created in 1969. Its founder Den Tagayasu gathered amateur musicians to live together in a kibbutz-type settlement on Sado Island. While there, besides leading a harsh life of self-discipline, they studied Japanese music and dance folklore.

Their stay in the commune gave birth to a contemporary interpretation of medieval melodies, through which Za Ondekoza caused a furore in the US in the 1970s.

Even though, in the decades that followed, a few more groups began to play in a similar style while the Demon Drummers were undergoing hard times, they remain as the pioneers in the art of taiko drumming as it is known today.

Far too often, the narrative of the collapse of an empire becomes a moral drama. Wealth is drained away by decadence, and power undercut by corruption. There are attempts at recovery, reform, re-consolidation; perhaps a war, or a grand alliance, or another gamble which seems mad in hindsight. Private fiefdoms emerge, tribes break away, and hostile external powers chip away at the borders.
