Dubrovnik Decides to Put an End to Tourist Crowds
Balkan Travellers
This week they decided to establish a special body, the Dubrovnik Cruising Club, which will not only coordinate the cruisers’ movements, but will also have the authority to withdraw concession for operation of any vessel or company that violates the established limitations.
The new body is designed after similar organisations in major Mediterranean resorts, such as Monte Carlo and Nice.
According to Croatian press, about 47 per cent of all the ships wharfed in Dubrovnik are large tourist vessels that carry over 1,000 passengers on board. In the summer, the town – considered to be the pearl of Croatia’s Adriatic coast and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, becomes unbearably packed with tourists.
Similarly to a trend observed in Venice, Dubrovnik’s residents are starting to sell their property and move out, thus causing the town to become an empty shell for its once majestic authentic local life.

Practically a country of its own, this vast island looms over all others in Greece. Nevertheless, as In Sfakia author Peter Trudgill aptly notes in his preface, “some parts of Crete are more special than others, and Sfakia, on the remote south coast, is certainly one of those.” Full Story
