Boat Ticket Prises in Greece Grow by 8% in Two Years

Balkan Travellers

19 March 2008 | The prices of boat tickets in Greece have grown steadily over the last years, with a 3.75 per cent rise in 2006 and 4.25 per cent in 2007, local media reported.

The latest increase will come into force on May 1, with the beginning of the new season, the Greek authorities announced. Big companies that fulfil certain requirements may keep their prices slightly lower, but that seems to be more of a temporary exception than a rule.

Earlier this year the Greek Ministry of Mercantile Marine said an even higher rise should be expected on international ferries travelling from the country. As BalkanTravellers.com reported in January, it announced that the rise will be between 8 and 14 per cent during the upcoming summer season, due to higher fuel prices and the significant tourist interest in this type of transport.

Far too often, the narrative of the collapse of an empire becomes a moral drama. Wealth is drained away by decadence, and power undercut by corruption. There are attempts at recovery, reform, re-consolidation; perhaps a war, or a grand alliance, or another gamble which seems mad in hindsight. Private fiefdoms emerge, tribes break away, and hostile external powers chip away at the borders.
