Leah Thomas of Pence wins 200 free games in the Ivy League, sets the record

The son of Leah Thomas, a transgender swimmer, is the second Ivy League champion this week.

On Friday night, Thomas dominated the 200-yard freestyle competition on her way to setting a meet record and calling herself the conference champion once again. She placed first with a score of 1:43.12, setting a record for meet and at Blodgett Pool at Harvard University.

The previous marks were set by Mickey Dalke of Harvard University. She set the record in pool with a score of 1:45.00 in 2018 and in the record in 2020 with a score of 1:47.78 in 2020.

Harvard finished numbers 2 and 3. Samantha Shelton finished 1:45.82, and Molly Hamlin had a 1:47.33.

It’s the second time Thomas has described herself as winning an individual race.

She won the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday night. She made a slow start to the event and had to fight Princeton’s Eli Marquardt early in the race but was able to pull out by the end. Thomas finished with a score of 4:37.32.

Thomas’ teammate Catherine Borker was second with a time of 4:44.83, while Penn’s Anna Sophia Calandadze was fourth with a time of 4:47.54.

Thomas finished the bout about seven seconds ahead of Buroker to take the win and set a 500 race record at the Blodgett rally.

Thomas has been drawn into the national spotlight in the debate over whether transgender female athletes should be able to compete against biological females in sporting events. She was given full permission to compete in the conference tournaments in the days leading up to it.
