Cain Velasquez, Former UFC Champion, Arrested in Shooting in the Bay Area

The San Jose Police Department said the victim was taken Monday to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Velazquez has been booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder. The police said in a tweet He was still there on Tuesday. CNN has reached out to Velazquez and his manager for comment. It is not clear if he has appointed a lawyer.

Police gave few details, other than saying the accident occurred near the intersection of the Monterey Highway and Bailey Street. CNN requested a police report but did not receive a report on Tuesday afternoon.

San Jose police said, “The motive and circumstances surrounding this incident are currently under investigation.”

“Our office has not yet received the police report for review, and therefore has no information on Mr. Velasquez. No charges have been filed at this time,” said Delaney Murray of the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

The prison entry indicated that no bail had been set, and that a court session was possible on Wednesday.

Velasquez, 39, competes for the UFC In the heavyweight category and became a two-time champion. His last fight was in 2019.

The mixed martial arts professional has 12 wins by knockout, two by decision and two defensive titles, according to his UFC profile. Velasquez had three losses.

He is born in Salinas, California, and trained in San Jose. After leaving the UFC, Velazquez Switched to professional wrestling.
