EU leaders plan to visit Ukraine’s capital as Russia’s war enters third week

as RussiaThe invasion of Ukraine continues for its third week, leaders of the three European Union Countries planned to visit Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, to show their support for the country, according to a report.

Poland’s Mateusz Morawiecki, Petr Fiala from the Czech Republic and Janez Jansa from Slovenia will travel to Kyiv after thousands of civilians and soldiers were killed and 2.8 million people from the city were forced to evacuate. They will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal.

Loud explosions were heard across Kyiv as recently as Tuesday morning, as Russia continued its siege.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently called on international partners to help end the Russian war, as cities across the country continue to fall under Russian control.

Some of these partners have begun to take action to show their support for his country, but members of the United Nations Security Council I mostly stayed out of the conflict.

As the international community moves to deter further aggression by Russia, mostly through sanctions, the situation in Ukraine remains dire.

Ukraine “The impact on civilians has reached appalling proportions,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters on Monday.

“We are witnessing the worst humanitarian crisis in Europe since the Second World War,” French Ambassador to the United Nations Nicolas de Riviere and Mexican Ambassador Juan Ramon de la Fuente said in a joint statement Monday. “The humanitarian situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate hour by hour,” with civilians dying every day and the number of refugees and internally displaced people continuing to increase.

“In order to allow a strong and united message to be sent by the international community, we have decided to take our initiative to the General Assembly,” the joint statement added.

On March 3, Zelensky personally challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to sit down to negotiate.

“Sit with me to negotiate, not just 30 meters away,” he said, referring to a long table where Putin and Russian officials have been meeting with foreign leaders. “I don’t bite. What are you afraid of?”

Recently, on Tuesday morning, Zelensky said he believed Ukraine was winning the military battle against a “confused” Russian army.

“The nineteenth day of our resistance is over. A historic war. Another difficult day, still approaching our victory. Peace for Ukraine is near,” Zelensky said, according to his presidential office.

He also called on Russian forces to lay down their arms and surrender.

“If you surrender to our forces, we will treat you the way people are supposed to be treated. As people, decent. In a way you were not treated in your army. And somehow your army does not treat our army,” added the Ukrainian president. “He chooses!”
