He served as the creative director of the famous French fashion house Chanel from 1983 until his death in February 2019, as well as the Italian luxury fashion house Fendi. From 1965, the German fashion designer loomed large in the fashion industry. He’s left his mark on Chloé, Patou, and Balmain, too, during his long career, working with every fashion house in various capacities (in addition to his eponymous label), and has influenced countless others.
His latest Fendi collection was shown at Milan Fashion Week just days after his death, with models including Gigi, Bella Hadid, and Kaia Gerber. The following month, Cruz made her runway debut at Chanel’s latest show.

Vintage throwbacks to Lagerfeld’s Monday ensembles will likely prevail — as well as nods to his personal fit and glove style. Lagerfeld’s collections weren’t known for any distinguishing feature—besides luxury; He was respected for the transformative power he had in every home he worked in. Younger models who have carried the Chanel torch, passed down from their mothers, include Gerber (daughter of Cindy Crawford) and Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Vanessa Paradis).

The themes for the ceremony are chosen based on the Costume Institute’s new exhibitions. While previous themes have explored highly conceptual or region-specific motifs, from “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” in 2018 to “China: Through the Looking-Glass” in 2015, individual designers were also honored. They include Rei Kawakubo, who is still alive, in 2017, and Alexander McQueen, the year after his death, in 2011.
