A Spanish court on Tuesday ordered pop star Shakira to be taken to court on charges of tax fraud that could lead to her being imprisoned for more than 8 years.
Shakira, 45 years old Accused of defrauding the Spanish government of 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer says she spent less than half of each of those years in Spain.
A judge in Barcelona has now ordered her to stand trial, although no date has been set for the proceedings.

Shakira’s representatives expressed confidence in her case in a statement to Fox News Digital in late July.
“Shakira has always cooperated and adhered to the law, demonstrated impeccable behavior as an individual and taxpayer and faithfully followed the advice of PricewaterhouseCoopers, a reputable and globally recognized tax firm,” the actor said.
“Unfortunately, the Spanish tax office, which loses one in two lawsuits with taxpayers, continues to violate her rights and pursues another unfounded case. Shakira is confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process,” the statement continued.

The alleged fraud occurred during her 11-year relationship with professional footballer Gerard Pique, who plays for Barcelona. The pair split in June But they have two children together.
