The trial of American journalist Ivan Gershkovich resumes in Russia

The trial of alleged spying by Wall Street Journal journalist Ivan Gershkovich resumed Thursday with the hearing of witnesses behind closed doors, Russian news agency Interfax reported, citing a spokesman for the Yekaterinburg court.

The 32-year-old American journalist is accused of collecting classified information on behalf of the CIA about a company that manufactures Russian tanks used in Ukraine. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. The Russian court in charge of the case announced on Tuesday that at the request of Ivan Gershkovich’s lawyers, the trial will continue from August 13 to July 18.

The American journalist was arrested on March 29, 2023 in a restaurant in Yekaterinburg, 1,400 km east of Moscow. He was subsequently imprisoned in Moscow’s Leportovo prison. Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal and the U.S. government have denied all of these allegations, saying he was only doing his job when he was authorized by the State Department to work in Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday “Irrefutable Evidence” But President Vladimir Putin said Russia was open to a prisoner exchange involving Ivan Kershkovich. U.S. officials have repeatedly said Russia was negotiating a prisoner exchange on trumped-up charges against Ivan Gershkovich and another jailed American, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan.
