49ers news: Matt Mayoko says ‘it’s personal’ between team and Depo Samuel

Another day, another turn in the Deebo Samuel saga. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Mayoko appeared with Tolbert and Cobbs on KNBR and provided the latest fuel that this story continues to burn.

“This, it seems, is getting personal. I just don’t see how it could get so personal when just two or three weeks ago Kyle Shanahan was babbling – and this was off cameras – raving about Deebo Samuel as a person and as a player, and his relationship with Deebo. How could this have gone south so quickly, I can’t explain at this point.”

I haven’t taken any hits when it comes to saying I think the team is conveying their message through Mayoko, and I can’t help but wonder if they’re trying to do it again here. During his press conference on Monday, John Lynch went out of his way to praise Debo’s leadership and character. Can 49ers Passing through the Mayoko area to publicly praise Samuel once again in a last-ditch effort to mend the walls?

Mayuko said, “I know for a fact that they were very aware of the fact that the first offer they gave to Deebo could not be a degrading one.” Providing a number is considered an insult. They were willing to pay him money.”

Of course, things never got to that point because Debo told the team not to make a contract offer. In any case, the earliest we’re likely to hear the truth is at an introductory press conference after Deebo trades, though he may refuse to get into that even then.

Before the end of the interview, Mayoko mentioned that 49 players do not expect Debo to play for his current salary if he remains with the team this season.

“This is a huge week. If he hasn’t traded by the end of Thursday, it would be an indication that the 49ers are committed to paying him big money. I don’t think they would even consider the idea of making him play this season under the contract he is currently slated to have, which is four million Dollars. That would be a huge slap in the face, and I can’t see any scenario where that could happen.”

The problem with this whole situation, of course, is that none of us could have seen a situation where Deebo and the 49ers parted a year later. However, here we are. Life comes in your fast.
