Chimmy Schembechler resigns from Michigan amid scrutiny of social media posts

Chimmy Schembechler, son of legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler and the program’s newly hired assistant director of recruiting, resigned Saturday after conducting scrutiny over offensive social media posts that appeared on his Twitter account.

Shimmy, a longtime NFL scout who was most recently with the Raiders, loves political posts with offensive and racist content. His Twitter account has since been deactivated.

“As of this afternoon, Chimmy Schembechler has resigned from his position with Michigan Football,” Coach Jim Harbaugh and Athletic Director Wardy Manuel said in a joint statement. “We are aware of some of the comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain to individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to where coaches, staff, and student-athletes feel welcome and where we fully support the university and the athletic department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Shemy’s resignation is the latest controversy regarding the legacy of Bo Schembechler, who led the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten championships as coach from 1969 to 1989. Shemy and other members of the Schembechler family defended Bo, who died in 2006, when sexual abuse allegations surfaced involving Robert Anderson, the team’s longtime physician.

Michigan’s football facility bears Schembechler’s name and outside stands a statue of Bo Schembechler.

Shimmy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
