Macedonia: Archaeology Excavations and Conservation Works at Treskavec Continue

BalkanTravellers.com

2 April 2009 | The archaeological research and conservation efforts at the Treskavec Monastery near the town of Prilep in southern Macedonia, will continue with full force this year, after the country set aside significant funds for the project.

The Macedonian Ministry of Culture has allotted 3 million Macedonian dinars (around 48,800 euro) for research, conservation and restoration works at the site. Talks about the construction of a road to the site are underway with the Transport Ministry.

The construction of the road is a priority because it ensures access of the necessary equipment and machinery. Last year, the restoration of the construction site at the Klepaloto sector was completed, which created conditions for the accommodation of 50 people needed for the extensive archaeological research, Branislav Ristevski, head of the excavations told the Vecher newspaper.

Last year, significant finnding were made in the vicinity of the Treskavec monastery. As BalkanTravellers.com reported, traces of rock engravings dating back 34,000 years ago were discovered.

The Ministry of Culture also told Vecher that the systematic archaeological research of the Klepaloto sector yielded remains from prehistoric times until today. Chronologically, the oldest finds – ceramic fragments, were unearthed between mixed cultural layers and could be preliminary dated to the Eneolithic and Bronze Ages.

The uncovered remains of buildings, such as foundations and parts of walls and the large amount of fragments vessel and construction ceramics are linked to the Hellenistic period (fourth to the first centuries BC).

The second clearly defined cultural layer at the site linked to Late Antiquity (fourth to the sixth centuries). Nevertheless, according to the publication, the most prevalent cultural layer is medieval, stemming from the Late Middle Ages.

The findings, according to the Ministry of Culture, make possible the rough reconstruction of the appearance of this segment of the monastery complex’s second zone in the period between the mid-thirteenth to the end of the fourteenth centuries, as a basis for future systematic research of the archaeological complex.

Although released just in 2007, Realm of the Black Mountain: A History of Montenegro comes from a much older school of scholarship. With this much needed work, former diplomat Elizabeth Roberts has produced the newest and best introduction to the full history of a storied and sometimes inscrutable land the identity of which was formed equally by its forbidding mountains and balmy Adriatic coast- still the features most representative of Montenegro today and most enticing to its increasing number of foreign visitors.
