Villages were evacuated, wounded and emergency aid in Peloponnese

A few days ago, a fire broke out on Mount Bentley near the Greek capital. About 140 firefighters, 50 trucks, eight water bombs and helicopters were mobilized to put out the fire in the Jia region.

According to a provisional estimate by the Greek Civil Defense, a dozen houses were burned and five people were injured. Five of the injured were taken to hospitals in the area with respiratory problems, the Civil Defense said.

Authorities sent warning messages on cell phones to warn the villages of Seria, Kamares, Achaiaz and Labri to be evacuated. Hospitals in Patras and the neighboring town of Igio have also been warned to accommodate the wounded, while the Coast Guard has been alerted to protect those who can suffocate from the ashes.

By the end of Saturday afternoon, the coastal resort of Logos had also been evacuated and the fire had spread towards the island. People and tourists were taken by the port police to the Agio port, a few kilometers from the village. The highway in the area concerned and the Rio-Andrea Bridge connecting the Beloponnese and Greece mainland were closed to traffic.
