Second American journalist in jail

A Russian court has extended the detention until October 23 of Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, who was arrested this week and became the second American reporter detained in Russia since Ivan Kershkovich. “By the decision of the court, Alsu Kurmasheva’s detention period is extended by 72 hours,” said the Sovetsky court in Kazan, in the Russian region of Tatarstan.

The journalist, who was arrested on Wednesday for breaching the duties associated with his status as a “foreign agent” imposed by the courts, was held in a cage reserved for the accused and wearing an FFP2 mask during the trial. According to AFP journalists, he was escorted there by masked agents.
